Language and Learning Disorders

While autism includes significant and sometimes extreme learning and communication difficulties, there are some specific syndromes and disorders which also may be part of autism or share characteristics with autistic spectrum disorders. Sometimes identification of a specific syndrome will help determine appropriate remediation and accomodation more precisely than the overall diagnosis of an autistic spectrum disorder.

Semantic Pragmatic Disorder This condition involves deficits in social and nonverbal communication. Semantic Pragmatic Disorder may be a separate PDD or it may simply describe the communication deficits in all verbal people with autism.
Hyperlexia This syndrome is defined by very early precocious reading, delays in verbal language, and deficits in social skills. Hyperlexia may be a feature of autism or may occur without meeting the criteria for a specific Pervasive Developmental Disorder.
Verbal or Oral Dyspraxia A motor disorder which specifically affects the mouth and speech.
Central Auditory Processing Disorder A condition which affects the way the brain descriminates and processes sounds. It can lead to communication problems, especially in places where there are significant background noises.
Nonverbal Learning Disabilities Closely related to Asperger Syndrome, nonverbal learning disabilities may include deficits in interpreting the nonverbal aspects of language, organization skills, mathematics, and motor skills.
